House 101

                    Amsterdam, 2020

This very spacial residential project in the centre of Amsterdam was for a client who used to be a professional dancer. Together we went through an in-deep design research process to find the true essence of what the house was suppose to be for her and set intentions of what she wanted the house to represent in her life. This process of ‘soul searching’ brought us the insights that the house should function as a sanctuary for her and her family, away from the business of the Amsterdam life and towards connection with themselves and each other.

We created a floorplan with one fixed core to solve all utilities such as; staircase, toilet, kitchen, storage and fusebox, leaving the space outside of this area completely empty. Here loose furniture can be placed and moved around freely. The walls and sliding door of the core are made from canvas frames with a translucent fabric. The translucency of the fabric creates a poetic layer between the emptiness of the living room space and the business of the storage, giving glimpses of happenings from both sides. The fabric catches light and shadow throughout all phases of the day, creating a dance of shadow and light, varying every moment and season.

The project is built from 100% simple and honest materials, all can be bought in any construction and DIY shop. All the wood we’ve used in the whole project is FSC Okoume multiplex treated with different type of oils. The wall in the kitchen is made out of lime sandstone bricks, treated with a coating. The stone flooring is the original under flooring of the building, polished and coated.
