            Stone and rope, 2025

‘Sekimori-ishi’ is the Japanese tradition of using a stone, tied with rope, to communicate that a road or area is closed, also called the ‘stopping stone’. The type of stone used for this installation are desert stones, to be found in area’s such as the Middle East and Africa. The stones are laid out in a circle, representing the European flag. This installation is meant evoke a contemplation of foreign lands, previously undefined by borders, and its relation to the coloniser.
